Brett was just 35 years old when he was killed in July 2010 at the Adelaide Desalination Plant construction work site.
The failure of a soft sling was marked as one of the reasons behind the 1.8-tonne steel beam fall, ending Brett’s life in an instant.
This catastrophic event and the prosecution that followed ended in a plea of guilty in the South Australian Industrial Courts. However, in an extraordinary turn of events, the penalty that the Magistrate gave to the employer Ferro Con, was immediately diluted by the simple step of lodging an insurance claim.
That seems an unbelievable precedent and one that deserves the immediate attention of law makers.
